NTP-server

Let's start keeping time on our server. Otherwise logging and Kerberos won't work as expected and you might forget your coffee break!

If you have a static IP and a somewhat reliable internet connection, you might consider joining the pool.ntp.org initiative. See http://www.pool.ntp.org/ for more information.

Pre-installation

Check your timezone settings by issuing:

tzconfig

Installation

Install the software:

apt-get install ntp-server ntp-doc

Configuration

Adjust /etc/ntp.conf for the ntp-servers you want to sync to. Remember to check the policy for their usage! If you want more info about the Debian NTP packages, check the docs at /usr/share/doc/ntp and /usr/share/doc/ntp-doc

/etc/ntp.conf

driftfile /var/lib/ntp/ntp.drift
statsdir /var/log/ntpstats/
statistics loopstats peerstats clockstats
filegen loopstats file loopstats type day enable
filegen peerstats file peerstats type day enable
